The Dragon Portal

The Dragon Portal

Free Short Story

Some books are meant to be lived, not just read.

A year after barely surviving twisted fairy tales, nineteen-year-old Bella and her friends have sworn off reading fiction in the magical library. It was the books from the enchanted room that once pulled them into the deadly stories.

But then…

Hobbes, a shapeshifting catragon, appears with a desperate plea to help an old ally. If they refuse, Eira, the dragon, threatens to burn their sanctuary to the ground. They face an impossible choice: return to the world where they nearly died or allow an army of firedrakes to cross into ours. Now powerless and mortal, they must rely on courage, friendship, and the bonds they forged in blood to face their most dangerous adventure yet.

Those who have read The Aerowyn Tales trilogy will recognize that The Dragon Portal is a continuation. There may be some spoilers for those who haven’t read the trilogy. Even though this story takes place after those books, it’s easy for a new reader to follow. Carla is currently writing a standalone novel with Eira the dragon’s backstory to conclude this cliffhanger.

About the Book

The library was supposed to be safe now. They were supposed to be done with adventures.

A year ago, Bella and her friends survived the impossible: pirates, twisted fairy tales, and a vengeful fae king who turned people into animals. They escaped with their lives and one rule: never read the fiction books again. The magical library in Layney’s Victorian mansion can still create anything from non-fiction tomes, but the stories? Those are portals to worlds where happily-ever-after isn’t guaranteed.

Then Hobbes arrives.

The orange tabby cat isn’t what he seems. He’s a catragon from the realm of Softfire, blessed with the ability to speak he brings a warning: the firedrake war is escalating. When the magnificent dragon Eira crashes through their library demanding help, the four friends face a terrifying truth. Layney gave up her powers to fix past mistakes, but her father’s sins still haunt the fantasy realm. King Peter has lost his family. Dragons are dying. And if they don’t act, the portal between worlds might tear open forever.

Quinn and Bella thought they’d have more time before facing another quest. Gerard hoped to keep Layney safe in the real world. But destiny has other plans. Armed with nothing but their wits, their loyalty to each other, and the promise that this time they’ll keep their memories, the four young adults must climb the library ladder to enter the fairy tales once again. Beyond that shelf lies a dragon’s lair, an impossible mission, and the adventure that will define who they really are. The only question is: will they all make it home?
