Evidently Sci-fi September is a thing. At least it is on Instagram. That’s why I decided to share some of my favorite books in this genre. The Lunar Chronicles are even better because they are sci-fi, fantasy, and fairy tale retellings, all my favorite genres combined. I created a tag #2025YearOfFairyTales on Instagram and have been attempting to read more fairy tale retellings this year, but today is about science fiction.
There is a debate about when science fiction was first “invented”. Some manuscripts as early as 1516 have been called a type of this genre. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein usually gets credit for being the first, but there were several stories before hers that are considered science fiction in their own way.
Does it matter or are you like me who just enjoys watching sci-fi movies and reading the books without knowing the origins? I knew I would enjoy reading Into the Churn because of it’s space setting, but it wasn’t on audiobook until recently. I was finally able to “read” the series the only way I can, on audiobook, since my free time is spent writing and marketing my own stories. Into the Churn is my favorite sci-fi series of this year and last year my favorite was Children of the Consortium. There are new ones each year that capture my fancy.
Science fiction shows us worlds we will probably never experience, but enjoy pretending that some day we could. Some things Star Trek used became real, so it isn’t totally impossible for us to live on another planet in the future. Except, hopefully without all the threats.

Good vs. Evil in Fantasy Books
